Hallo and grüß dich! My name is Stephen, I’m originally from the USA, but I live in Austria. The German language has been my biggest passion since I started learning it at the age of 14. Back then, I learned on my own with books, but now I’ve completed a PhD in German studies and achieved C2 proficiency. If I can do it, nothing is stopping you either! I’ve been teaching German for five years now and love the profession. From non-native to C2 in German and a PhD in German Studies - I have loved teaching language courses at three American universities for the past five years, from beginner to advanced, including at an immersive, intensive language school, so I am particularly sympathetic to the cognitive load of intensive language learning. Because I love teaching the language so much, I am currently pursuing an additional MA in Teaching German as a Foreign and Second Language, which keeps me up to date with the best and most innovative methods.
Some areas of speciality are: conversation, intensive instruction, German for beginners, German literature, and Austrian literature, culture, history and dialect.Meine Stunden und mein Unterrichtsstil
I see my role as a guide for your learning goals and preferences, and I am particularly skilled at tailoring my language to your needs and level. This allows us to communicate as much as possible in German and helps you make faster progress. Above all, lessons should be fun, engaging, and relevant. You bring to the lesson your desires, questions, or interests, and I craft a lesson that guides you through material, targeting the language skills that you need to reach an open-ended output that has you using the language confidently on your own. Stephen is easy to talk to and makes me feel comfortable speaking German. He’d seemed that way in his video, and he’s like that in real life. For me, this is the most important quality in a teacher. He speaks perfect German, with a nice accent. And as someone who learned German himself, he has a feel for the difficulties a learner encounters in grammar and pronunciation and the explanations that make sense to a learner. I’m happy to have found my new German teacher.
