A month ago, I began learning Italian without knowing what to expect. I simply hoped to make a little progress and perhaps pick up a few phrases. To my surprise—and delight—this journey has become something I genuinely look forward to, especially my twice-weekly lessons with Giusy. Giusy creates a safe, supportive learning environment where I never feel judged for making mistakes. Her constant encouragement has been vital. A year ago, I started learning Italian with Giusy not knowing where the journey would take me. Twelve months later, I am conjugating verbs in five tenses, using object pronouns, and holding real conversations about travel, culture, and the differences between Singapore and Italy. These are not rehearsed dialogues. They are real topics, and that makes all the difference. Giusy keeps lessons varied in a way that makes an hour disappear. Tough grammar sessions give way to listening exercises, reading passages, and pronunciation work. She pushes me to read aloud, corrects me, and moves on without making me feel self-conscious. Puzzles and structured exercises break up the heavier grammar topics so nothing feels like a grind. She adapts to how adults actually learn. This week, Giusy and I reach lesson 100 together. I did not count the lessons as they passed. I just kept showing up, and so did she. One hundred lessons sounds like a lot. But when you have a teacher who makes twice a week feel like something you choose rather than something you schedule, it adds up quietly. The progress is real. I notice it most in the lessons themselves. Giusy now conducts most of our session in Italian, shifting to English only when I genuinely need it. A year ago, that would have left me completely lost. Now it feels natural. What I reflect on most is not the grammar. It is the consistency Giusy brings to every session. The variety, the patience, the way she corrects me without breaking my confidence. That is not easy to find. I still cannot say "lavoro" properly.
