I am David Phillips, an accomplished educator and communication specialist with a strong academic background (BSc, MSc, PGCE, CELTA, FHEA). With extensive international experience spanning the UK, Europe, Asia, and Africa, I have successfully guided professionals and students in mastering English for academic, professional, and examination purposes. My career highlights include training executives, refining academic papers, and preparing candidates for IELTS success. Beyond teaching, I maintain an active role in journalism and music performance, disciplines that continually inform my approach to effective communication.
Having been in the profession since 1999, I have had the chance to teach many different subjects to many different people and at many different levels.
Before becoming an English teacher, I was a science teacher in secondary schools in Rwanda and England. Then I moved on to English teaching as my love of travel and languages took me away from the laboratory.
During that time, I've learned many different teaching styles, not just from books and training courses, but from the students themselves.
In 2018, I started to teach online and I've been improving my online teaching technique ever since.
The most important quality that I have as a teacher is that I listen to you, the student.
This ensures that I can react to your needs instantly should you need help, guidance or further explanation. In this way I learn from you while you are learning from me.

I had a fantastic class with David. He immediately understood the context of my work and the professional knowledge behind it, even though it is quite specialized. What impressed me most was how quickly he grasped my ideas and helped me polish my presentation script in a way that felt both natural and professional.
David has a sharp eye for language nuance—he doesn’t just correct grammar, but helps me shape the tone and rhythm so it sounds authentic. At the same time, he is patient and encouraging, which makes the whole process very enjoyable.

David is so professional and well-prepared in all aspects for helping students be more easily able to connect with the language they're struggling with. I always appreciate the way in which he makes conversations productive and engaging. He covers from thought-provoking questions to small things in everyday experience while having me even sometimes forget about the fact that I'm talking to him in English, which is very comfortable and productive at the same time.
