While highlighting my dire need to really switch from just studying characters and reading, Esme gave a first quick intro how to greet each other, offered a variety of topics to dive into and then gave a good introduction to the chosen topic, colors - cross-referencing them with memory hooks for easier memorization. I would definitely recommend her as a teacher!

I’ve been taking lessons with Esme for almost two months now, and they’ve been excellent. Unlike other teachers I’ve had in the past, she really tailors the lessons to my specific needs and focuses on the areas I need to improve, without wasting time. This is especially helpful if your level doesn’t fit neatly into a “standard” framework like HSK. Even in this short amount of time, I feel like I’ve learned a lot. Esme comes up with creative ways to help me remember things, and she is very knowledgeable about the Chinese language overall. I’d definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a thoughtful, adaptable, and effective teacher.

I’ve been studying with Esme for five months now and I’m very glad I found her. I’m a heritage speaker, so my Chinese is uneven. My spoken comprehension is much stronger than my reading. Esme understood that gap quickly and is great at figuring out what I already know vs. what I actually need explained. I’ve especially enjoyed how she teaches characters and vocabulary. She knows a lot about character origins and components, but also comes up with memorable associations when that works better. She’s extremely patient too. I forget words constantly, even ones I’ve seen many times, and she calmly helps me remember them without making it stressful. Her knowledge of modern Chinese and current culture makes lessons feel much more relevant than just studying from a textbook. Most importantly, my reading has improved a lot. I recently revisited older HSK material from before I studied with her and was surprised by how easily I could read it, even passages I had never studied before.
