Hello! I have been teaching on italki for about four years. Based on my experience, I believe that students who thoroughly study textbooks learn to speak beautiful and good Japanese the fastest. On the other hand, students who focus only on conversation tend to end up with messy grammar, forget words easily, and use a lot of slang, resulting in strange Japanese.
Therefore, my conclusion is that the best approach is either to study a textbook like GENKI with a teacher or to study it independently while practicing conversation with a teacher.

Cherri先生 has great energy! I like her teaching style. We read from a textbook together and she corrected me where needed. She opened up the session to fun discussions about Japan and life. I hope to have more lessons with her.
