I have lived in the UK for over ten years, so English feels like my native tongue, and I know British culture well. I speak English and Cantonese fluently, have good Mandarin, and some Japanese. I have taught in both university and secondary school, working with young people and adults. Students find me approachable and say I make learning comfortable. I explain ideas clearly and welcome questions. I can help students write strong personal statements, as I did for my BA, MA, and PhD. I can support scholarship success: I gained a university-funded MA award and a CHASE scholarship, a prestigious UK arts and humanities body. My lessons are practical and focus on English you can use in daily life. Instead of drilling grammar, I bring English alive through conversations and examples from music, films, and TV. We may analyse a scene or song together. I also include weekly spelling practice with words we’ve seen or that students want to learn. Eric is a really, really good teacher who is equipped with strong logical and critical-thinking abilities. His storytelling is excellent, which makes difficult concepts very easy to understand.

I really enjoy learning with Eric. He is patient, professional, and always well-prepared for each class. What I appreciate most is that he listens carefully and tailors the lessons to my needs, whether it’s speaking practice, grammar, or real-life expressions. He also creates a very comfortable atmosphere, so I feel relaxed and confident when speaking. Thanks to Eric, I can clearly see my progress and I always look forward to our lessons.

I’ve studied with almost 40 teachers on italki and taken over 80 lessons in total. With my background in TESOL, experience as an IELTS tutor, and now doing a Master’s in Applied Linguistics, I can honestly say Eric stands out as one of the very best. He’s not only skilled in his teaching methods, but also incredibly empathetic and supportive. I’d recommend him without hesitation to anyone who wants a great teacher.
