Hi . l read the defination between lift and raise and l got it. But then l came across these sentences " raise your hands / lift your hands " and " My heartbeat is raising Or you lift my spirit " these sentences are confusing. Because l know " raise " is used in figurative way , " lift is used for real thing " hand is not figurative , and spirit isn't real thing . why are these true ? They both mean "move up", but "raise" is usually used in an idiomatic/figurative way ("The sales were raised by 150%"), and "lift" is for when you are actually, literally moving a real thing up ("I lifted the box."). There is some overlap between the two, but not too much.
