In many languages, the negative of "must" simply means "it isn't necessary". In English it does not. "You mustn't come" means "don't come, it's not allowed", while "You don't have to come" means "you can come if you like, but it's not necessary". In this episode: • Must: your own feelings and rules • Have to and have got to: outside obligations • Mustn't vs don't have to • Needn't, a typically british form • Advice: should, ought to, had better, and a scene • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: I must ring my mum. — I feel I really should You must try this cake! — a strong, friendly recommendation We must get together soon. — a warm wish (often polite, not a firm plan) You must be home by ten. — a rule a parent sets I must remember to buy bread. — a note to myself I have to be at work by nine. — my job says so The kids have to wear a uniform. — a school rule I've got to pick the kids up at three. — the school finishes then (casual) You mustn't touch the oven, it's hot. — danger, don't do it You mustn't tell Dad about the present. — keep it secret You don't have to come. — it's your choice You don't have to take your shoes off. — it's fine either way I don't have to work tomorrow. — a day off You needn't bother. — don't worry, it's not necessary You needn't take your shoes off. — it's fine to keep them on You needn't wait for me. — go ahead I needn't have worried. — I worried, but it wasn't necessary I didn't need to buy milk. — there was milk, so I didn't buy any You should get an early night. — my advice We should ring Nan. — it would be good Real British English: the complete spoken course for learners worldwide — modern British accent, everyday grammar, phrasal verbs, idioms, slang, he/she/it for things, and real conversations at home.
