If someone is 'away with the fairies' what does it mean?

I am a US native, and a senior citizen. I have never, ever, ever heard this expression used, nor have I seen it in print. It is possible that it might be British and from the 1800s. It would never be used today in the United States because of the current slang meaning of one of the words.
