Learning Material.

Once my exams are over, I wish to study Japanese in my spare time (similar to me learning Piano, a full hour at least a day).
Can I ask to all you teachers or those who have teachers, or even those who are studying Japanese, what are the best formal books (for adults) to study from?
I have heard good reviews from the Genki series, but I want to know some others.

Hi Frazer,

For Kanji I recommend Remembering the Kanji by James Heisig. There are 3 volumes. The first volume only teaches meanings and writing of kanji, but it uses a method that has been effective for me. After getting through volume one, you will have the same advantage a Chinese native speaker has when starting Japanese. Other than that I have only used Genki and a similar textbook called "みんなの日本語".

I also like to read Tae Kim's guide to Japanese Grammar once in awhile.
