Enseignant professionnelSAY vs TELL – What’s the difference?
Many students ask me: What’s the difference between say and tell?
Here’s an easy guide:
- SAY – Focuses on the words spoken
Use it when you're not saying who you spoke to.
Examples:
He said he was tired.
She said, “I’m going home.”
What did you say?
- TELL – Focuses on giving information to someone
Use it when you mention who you’re talking to.
Examples:
He told me he was tired.
She told her friend a secret.
Can you tell me your name?
* Quick tip:
If you use a person, use TELL:
✔ He told me.
❌ He said me.
