Airport, hotel, restaurant, pharmacy, and emergencies.&nbsp; I’m an Italian teacher and I made this for my students who travel to Italy every year. Save it on your phone. AT THE AIRPORT AND ON THE TRAIN&nbsp; This is where most tourists panic first. You simply have to learn how they work and, most importantly, when to use them.&nbsp; So, if you want to make your Italian sound more natural and conversational, you've come to the right place!&nbsp;In this article, we will look at three incredibly common Italian expressions:&nbsp; 1. The meaning of boh, mah, and vabbè, and when and how to use them2. Examples in everyday Italian&nbsp; Are you ready? Let's dive in!&nbsp; <h3>1. The meaning of boh, mah, vabbè, and when and how to use them</h3> These three little words may be short and simple, but they can communicate a surprising amount of meaning depending on the situation and the speaker’s tone. Their meaning is often so direct and straightforward that, if you are not careful, you may unintentionally sound rude, abrupt, or even disrespectful to the person you are speaking with. What is the Passato Remoto in Italian&nbsp;2. How to conjugate it&nbsp;3. When to use it&nbsp;4. Examples Are you ready? Let's dive in!&nbsp; <h3>1. What is the Passato Remoto in Italian&nbsp;</h3> Have you ever asked yourself why the Passato Remoto is called that?&nbsp;It obviously refers to the past, but the adjective remoto tells us a little more about its&nbsp;meaning.&nbsp;It is remote, distant, and far removed from us. But how far exactly?&nbsp; What will surprise you is that we Italians don't only measure time in seconds, minutes,&nbsp;hours, days, months, and years. We feel it. In fact, our relationship with time is intense&nbsp;and deeply connected to our own perspective. What do I mean by that? Even if an event&nbsp;happened a long time ago, we may still feel emotionally close to it, and the opposite can&nbsp;also be true.&nbsp; For instance, if an event does not feel personally connected to us anymore, we will feel&nbsp;distant from it, and that is when we would use the Passato Remoto to describe it.&nbsp; Spoiler alert: for events that are perceived close, you can refer to the Passato Prossimo&nbsp;instead.&nbsp; Now that we've learned what this tense is, let's see how its conjugation works!&nbsp; <h3>2. The frustrating truth is that your school taught you how to write English, but they may have accidentally taught your mouth the wrong physical habits to speak it.&nbsp; Imagine you are sitting at your computer typing an email. You use the exact keyboard layout you have used for years. Your fingers move fast because they know where every letter is. Now imagine someone swaps your keyboard with a different layout from another country. The letters are all mixed up.&nbsp; You sit down to type. You know exactly what you want to say in your mind. But your fingers keep hitting the wrong keys. You slow down, make mistakes, and delete the same word three times. Is that a brain problem? Did you forget how to spell? No. Your hands are just reaching for the old habits they practiced for decades on your original layout.&nbsp; This is the exact hidden reason why you still have a strong accent in English. How do I know this? After testing the speech patterns of thousands of people from all over the world, I saw the exact same errors repeating themselves. Your accent is not random. It is a natural habit based on your first language.&nbsp; <h3>The Reality of International Business&nbsp;</h3> When you speak English, your mouth is trying to use a specific physical system. In global business, remote work, and tech, Standard North American English is the most common format used for international meetings.&nbsp;This is simply a practical reality:&nbsp; ● International Media: People around the world consume movies, videos, and podcasts. Because of this, global ears are used to hearing this specific speech flow.&nbsp;● Easy Listening: When you speak with this rhythm, international clients process your words easily. They can focus on your ideas instead of trying hard to understand your words.&nbsp;If your goal is to be understood instantly without people asking you to repeat yourself, learning these basic sound patterns is the fastest path. <h3>How Native Mouth Habits Create an Accent&nbsp;</h3> When you speak your first language, your mouth movements happen on autopilot. But when you use those same mouth habits to speak English, it creates an accent:&nbsp; ● Languages like Mandarin &amp; Cantonese: Your native habits use pitch changes to mean different words. In English, this causes you to drop your voice suddenly and cut words short. A word like product gets cut off, so the final letters disappear and people miss your point.&nbsp;● Arabic: Your throat muscles are trained to make deep sounds at the back of your airway. English uses sounds at the front of the mouth. Words with many consonants together—like scripts or strands—feel physically difficult and sound muffled.&nbsp;● Languages like Japanese &amp; Korean: Your tongue is trained to add a vowel sound after every consonant. When you use that flat tone in English, native speakers can easily mistake your words as cold or angry, even when you are being polite.&nbsp; <h3>Accent Patterns from Different Regions&nbsp;</h3> This also happens when you learn English from different regions of the world. Every region uses its own mouth habits:&nbsp;● Southeast Asia (like Tagalog in the Philippines): Tagalog gives every single syllable equal time and stress. American English stretches important words and squishes small words together ("I want to go to the store" sounds like "I-wanna-goda-the-store"). If you speak with equal stress on every word, your English sounds choppy and robotic.&nbsp;● South Asia (like languages in India): English in this region uses unique tongue placements, like curling the tongue backward for T and D sounds. While fluent, these sound patterns are physically different from American speech and can feel hard for Western listeners to follow quickly.&nbsp;These are just a few examples. The list goes much deeper. Every regional accent comes from different physical habits. <h3>The Part of Language Most Classes Skip&nbsp;</h3> Most advanced English learners hit a wall for one simple reason: You did the hard work, but you were never taught the first building block of language—the physical sound. You took grammar classes. You passed tests. You memorized vocabulary lists. You built a smart dictionary in your head. But nobody taught you how to physically make all of the correct English sounds.&nbsp; <h3>Why Schools Are Not Designed to Fix Your Accent&nbsp;</h3> Think back to your very first English classes in school. You probably sang the alphabet song: "A, B, C, D..."&nbsp;When you sang that song, you learned the name of the letter A (which sounds like "AYE"). But in real English, the letter A changes depending on the words around it! It makes different sounds in apple, about, father, or gate. Traditional schools rarely teach this, so students pronounce words wrong across the board.&nbsp; Even worse, picture a normal classroom with 30 or 40 students chanting out loud together. A teacher cannot hear your individual mouth placement in a loud room. They cannot see that your tongue is in the wrong spot.&nbsp;Because most teachers in those schools learned English as a second language themselves, they pass down the exact same sound errors to whole classrooms, generation after generation. You didn't fail to learn. If you skip the dough and put cheese and pepperoni on a piece of plain white sandwich bread, it is not a real pizza. Shadowing without fixing your mouth habits first is just like putting cheese on white bread. You are just copying words or phrases in isolation, rather than fundamentally fixing the issue. <h3>Speaking Is a Physical Sport, Not a Written Subject&nbsp;</h3> Grammar books will not fix your physical mouth movements. When a coworker asks, "Sorry, can you say that again?" they are not judging your intelligence. You can try extreme online fad diets, stop eating bread completely, or go on a three-day water fast. Those gimmicks might give you a tiny, short-term result, but they aren't sustainable, and they don't build real strength. Professionals don't rely on online hacks—they go to the gym, learn proper form, and build real muscle. Your speech is no different. Stop wasting time getting lost in the noise of endless internet methods that only offer short-term band-aids.&nbsp; <h3>How to Fix Your Sound Foundation&nbsp;</h3> The secret to clear speech is simple: Combine targeted pronunciation coaching with active conversation practice.&nbsp;1. Fix Your Physical Habits: Work with someone trained in pronunciation mechanics. They can find where your native language habits sneak in and fix the basic sounds you missed in school.&nbsp;2. Build the Habit: Once your physical sounds are correct, use those new movements in regular conversation practice until they feel automatic.Do not assume that every native English speaker can fix your accent.
