Las teorías de aprendizaje de idiomas buscan entender  la habilidad de los seres humanos para adquirir el lenguaje, tanto la lengua materna como un segundo idioma,  en diferentes contextos culturales, sociales y académicos.

Existen diferentes hipótesis  y perspectivas  para comprender el aprendizaje de un idioma, y hay un gran número de investigaciones  que buscan sustentar y poner a prueba las diferentes hipótesis, comparando  su efectividad y estableciendo nuevos hallazgos.
