How Malayalam became itself — one of the better-documented cases anywhere of a language separating from its parent. The mechanism is always the same four things: 1. GEOGRAPHY. A barrier reduces contact. 2. POLITICS. Separate rulers mean separate centres of prestige. 3. DIFFERENTIAL CONTACT. One side gets a heavy dose of another language; the other does not. 4. INTERNAL INNOVATION. Each side changes on its own, and the changes do not cross. Latin split into Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian exactly this way. Old Norse split into Icelandic, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish the same way. Malayalam split from Tamil the same way, more recently, with all four factors unusually visible. I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken. THE BARRIER The Western Ghats. A narrow coastal strip cut off from the Tamil interior by a mountain wall, with a coast that traded more easily with the sea than with the country on the other side of the hills. THE POLITICS Rulers whose centre of gravity sat on the coast. Once the courts, the temples and the schools are on your side of the mountains, the prestige forms of speech stop being imported from the other side. THE LARGEST SINGLE FACTOR From roughly the first millennium, Sanskrit became embedded in Kerala's temple, court and scholarly life to a degree it never reached in the Tamil country, where a strong indigenous literary tradition and later a purist movement resisted it. Malayalam absorbed Sanskrit not merely as vocabulary but structurally — which is why a Malayalam sentence can carry a Sanskrit phonology that a Tamil sentence will not.
