Emotion words are the first thing you learn in any language and the last thing you learn to hear in a new variety. Indian English has a rich set of small exclamations, "arre", "oh-ho", "achha", "ayyo", "haan", "wah", that carry surprise, delight, sympathy or mild alarm, and each has its own tune. To an outside ear they are noise: a listener hears "arre" and wonders if it is a name, hears "ayyo" and wonders if someone is hurt, hears a rising "achha?" and does not know an answer is expected. What you will learn: • "Arre": the all-purpose attention word • "Oh-ho", "Achha", "Haan", "Wah" • Southern exclamations: "Ayyo", "Aiyyo", "Ada" • The sympathy tune and phrases • Excitement and delight • Matching tune to words • Practice: decode the scene • Listening strategies • Self-check questions to test your ear Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes. Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
