Business English Podcast: Taking a Career Break (B2)

Transport company Uber has announced a new service that could make it cheaper for people in the US to travel to and from the airport and other popular places.

It's called Uber Shuttle — and it's really just a bus service offered by the company.

"Whether you're a traveler, sports fan, or concertgoer, get ready because Uber Shuttle is arriving soon," said Uber's Anthony le Roux when the news was announced in the middle of May.

Uber users will be able to book up to five seats on a shuttle service to big events and airports from a central place.

It might be useful if you're at a big, out-of-town concert and there aren't enough regular Ubers or taxis, for example.

Uber's shuttles will have between 14 and 55 seats, and people will be able to book up to a week before they travel.

The company says the cost of the shuttle will be "a fraction" of the price of a regular Uber.

In one example Uber gave during the announcement, the price of the shuttle was about one-third of the price of a regular Uber.

The shuttle, which has previously been tested in India, will be available in some US cities this summer to help people travel to and from events.

As for airports, Uber has not yet said which ones the shuttle will be available at.

When it is available, users will see the shuttle as an option in their apps, and they'll be able to rate and tip shuttle drivers just like regular Uber car drivers.

みなさん、こんにちは！日本語講師のAikoです。

私は今、長野県にいます。長野県は、日本に４６個ある都道府県の一つです。私の故郷、私の地元です。

私は、今年の一月から、バリ島で暮らしながら、インドネシア語を勉強していました。

バリ島はインドネシアにある島の名前です。有名なリゾートなので、皆さんも聞いたことがあったり、行ったことがある人もいると思います。

バリ島の大学に通って、５ヶ月間、インドネシア語を勉強していました。そのコースが６月に終わったので、昨日、日本に帰って来ました。６ヶ月ぶりの日本です。久しぶりの日本です。

「帰ってきた」と言いましたが、ずっと帰るわけではありません。「一時帰国」です。一時は、時間の一時ではなく、一時的、英語で「temporary」です。「少しの間」「しばらくの間」という意味です。

私は、一ヶ月間だけ「一時帰国」をしています。８月には、またバリ島に戻って、インドネシア語の勉強を続ける予定です。

それでは今回のテーマです。今日は、今、Nintendo Switchでプレイしている「スイカゲーム」の話をしたいと思います。

私は前回のポッドキャストで「ゼルダの伝説 ティアーズ・オブ・ザ・キングダム」の話をしました。

実は前回のpodcastを収録した後、「ゼルダの伝説」のセーブデータを間違って消してしまいました。うっかり「消去ボタン」を押してしまい、データがなくなってしまいました。結構長くプレイしていたのでとてもショックでしたよ。その後は、もう一度最初からプレイする気がなくなって、もうやっていません。

その代わり、最近は「スイカゲーム」で遊んでいます。

スイカゲームのルールはとても簡単です。上からいくつかの種類のフルーツが落ちてきます。同じ種類のフルーツを合わせると、少し大きなフルーツに“進化”していきます。進化 は英語で「evolution」です。「進化」という言葉は、「テクノロジーの進化」や「人類の進化」「チンパンジーの進化」のように、技術や人、生き物が、段階的に発展することを意味します。

スイカゲームで「フルーツが進化する」というと、フルーツを大きくする、という意味です。同じフルーツ、例えばりんごとりんごを二つずつくっつけて、だんだんとフルーツを大きくしていき、最終的に一番大きいフルーツ、スイカの完成を目指す、というゲームです。

私がこのゲームの好きなところ、好きなポイントは「３つ」あります。

一つ目は、ルールがとても簡単で、頭を使いません。なので、疲れている時でも遊ぶことができます。

二つ目は、すぐに終わるところです。一回のゲームは大体５分くらいで終わります。なので、寝る前や休憩中のちょっとした時間に遊ぶことができます。

三つ目は、癒されるところです。フルーツのキャラクターがとっても可愛いです。また、ゲームに使われている曲もスローテンポで癒されます。

私はこの数ヶ月、インドネシア語の勉強と仕事で、毎日疲れていました。なので、難しいゲームやRPGゲームをする気持ちが起こりませんでした。

そんな疲れている時でも、スイカゲームはちょっとだけ時間がある時に遊べて、とっても良いストレス解消になりました！

私はまだスイカゲームのソロプレイ（一人プレイ）しかしたことがありません。スイカゲームのオンラインプレイ（二人プレイ）もやってみたいです。

Making Polite Requests in English

こんにちは！Atsushiです。

前回はあいさつの返し方について、話しました。
もっとたくさんあると思います。また思い出したらPodcastにしますね。

さて、今回は、会話中のあいづちについて。
日本では、会話中によくあいづちを使います。
日常では、相手の話に合わせて同意しながら話を聞きます。
その時に言う言葉や、しぐさのことをあいづちといいます。
日本人のあいづちは多い、と言われることもありますが、基本的にはあいづちをすることは良いと思います。相手の話を聞いていることを表す方法の1つです。

例えば、言葉はこんな感じです。
・はい、ええ、うん 
・そうですね (that's how it is, I think)
・そうですか (is that so?)
・ほんとう、ほんと、ほんとに、ほんま (really)
・なるほど (I see, that's right)
・それから？(And？)
このような言葉を良く使うと思います。
もちろん他にもたくさんあります。

例えば、こんなやり取りをします。
ロールプレイすると関西弁になってしまいますが、お許しください。
A:昨日さー
B:うん
A:仕事でめちゃ良いことがあってー
B:えー、いいやん、どうしたん？
A:お客さまから、この店はいつもみんなニコニコしてて良いねっていわれてんー
B:えー、そうなんや！めっちゃうれしいやん！
A:そんなこと、直接言われることってあんまりないやん？
B:うん、たしかに。
A:そう、だから昨日はほんまに気分良かったわーー。
B:それは良かったなーー。

こんな感じですね。
どうですか？

会話をスムーズにするためにあいづちを良く使います。
反対にあいづちがないと話している人は少し不安になります。はなしを聞いてくれているかわからないからです。

ですので、話を聞いている時はぜひ、いろいろあいづちを使ってみてください。むずかしい時は、うんうん、とか、そうなんですね、とかだけでも大丈夫です。
