Could you tell me if these sentences make sense ? They should be okay when rewriting the following: At this school, students have to wear a tie whether they like it or not. ( Use given ) Students at this school ....of whether or not to wear a tie My attempts: Students at this school are not given the possibility of whether or not to wear a tie Students at this school are not given a chance of whether or not to wear a tie Are both options correct? Can prepositions Of follows chance?? Is there any other way to rephrase it ? Thank you

'Possibility' and 'chance' are not correct here. You need 'choice' or 'option'. ... are not given the choice/option to wear a tie or not. ... are not given the choice/option of wearing a tie or not. But stating both is unnecessary, and makes the sentence less clear. It is simpler to say: ... are not given the choice/option to not wear a tie. ... are not given the choice/option of not wearing a tie.

Hi! 😊 Your first sentence is understandable, but it sounds a bit unnatural: Students at this school are not given the possibility of whether or not to wear a tie. Your second sentence is not correct because we don’t say “a chance of whether or not.” It’s more natural to say: Students at this school are not given a choice about wearing a tie. Students at this school are not given a chance to choose whether or not to wear a tie. After “given,” it usually sounds better to use “a chance to + verb” rather than “of whether or not.”
