‎Why isn't the phrase 'most of the earth' used in this sentence? Is there any difference between using 'most of earth' and 'most of the earth' in this sentence? Does one imply the surface of the Earth while the other implies the planet itself? If so, which expression refers to the surface and which refers to the planet as a whole?

Earth here is the name of the planet. It's just like Venus, Mars or Jupiter.

Adding to what Claire said, the fact that "Earth" is capitalized is what tells you that it is a proper name. That is why "the" is not needed. Had "earth" not been capitalized, it would not be a proper name. In that case it would be the same as "land" or "sea" and would need "the": "Most of the earth is covered with water." "The sea covers most of the earth." "Much of the land is used for growing crops."
