As today Ukraine celebrates Orthodox Easter, I want to share the story about how christianity appeared on this territory.
Volodymyr the Grate was the Prince of Kievian Rus’ whose fate was to christen this land. But here is the question: what was the problem of paganism? During centuries the ancestors of modern Ukrainians were worshiping gods of sun, wind and etc. However, in the 10th century the indicator of a developed country was the existence of religion its’ land, and as Volodymyr’s desire was to have good external relations with other countries, he decided to take an example of the Byzantine Empire. He was baptized in Korsun and then baptized the Rus’ people in Pochaiana river. What’s interesting is that ordinary people didn’t take this procedure of christianization seriously, so they kept praying to gods of nature with crosses on their necks for a while.
One more interesting fact!
Before Volodymyr came to the realization that he would need to baptize the Rus’, he had been famous for his exceptional peccability. It is believed that he had over 800 concubines and didn’t disdain wine. That’s why he is still called “the holiest sinner”.
