Could I say that was 'pretend basketball'? 2. Is it correct to ask them, "Did you play pretend basketball yesterday"? 3. "a pretend basketball rim" and "a pretend basketball," do these phrases sound natural? How would you describe them? Thank you very much. :)

I wouldn't say "pretend" in any of those instances. Just say that they use a hula hoop as a goal and play basketball in the pool. Then, if your listener asks you can describe the ball or give more detail about the game.

They play basketball in the pool (with a small ball) and a hula hoop as the rim. They play a version of basketball in the pool using a hula hoop as the rim. Did you play the basketball game after your class yesterday?

Yes, "pretend" can be used as an adjective that is a synonym for "make-believe", "imaginary", ... You can also say "pretended" to mean the same thing.
