Interesting question. To me, it doesn’t sound quite right in that context.
I would most likely use ‘refresh myself’ to mean ‘update my knowledge’.
I forget how to use this thing. I need to refresh myself. Or ‘I need a refresher.’ (My former knowledge has faded and I need to reestablish it)
Could you please refresh my drink? (Fill it up, give me more)
But I could say both:
Traveling to new places refreshes me.
Traveling to new places is refreshing.
But they have different meanings. The first is more serious, and suggests boosting your spirit. The second is milder - it makes you feel good.
