Have you watched the Japanese movie “Let Me Eat Your Pancreas?” I remember when this movie came out and lit up the internet in Korea in 2017 because of its title. Back then, I was also curious about why anyone would want to eat someone else’s pancreas. (What’s even pancreas?). Anyway, I watched this movie today and figured out what this cannibalistic title is about. Here is a summary of the movie. Haruki is a high school teacher who wants to quit. However, he gets to be put in charge of the school library committee before the reconstruction of the library begins. Haruki was a member of the committee when he was a student at this school. One day, being at the library reminds Haruki of someone back in high school: The movie flashes back to the time when Haruki was a student. A reserved loner, Haruki spots a diary on a hospital floor. In the diary, the writer says she is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has only a few years left. Turns out, the diary belongs to Sakura, the most popular girl in Haruki’s homeroom. Haruki gets embarrassed and feels sorry about the situation that he gets to know about her secret. However, keeping a smile on her face, Sakura treats Haruki with kindness. After the incident, Haruki and Sakura become close; Sakura tells Haruki that he is the only classmate who knows about her disease, and Haruki promises that he won’t tell anyone. From that day on, Sakura asks Haruki to accompany her to the places that she wants to visit before she dies. One thing leads to another, Sakura even takes this lucky dude to a luxury hotel and spends time with him in the same room playing a card game. After having a fun night, Sakura confides in Haruki that she’s afraid of death. The story continues. Despite its gory title, “Let Me Eat Your Pancreas” is a fairytale-like movie that reminds me of my high school days when I was relatively pure-minded. If you feel like going back to the time you were “pure,” this wholesome movie is there for you.
