Hi! I would like to know if I want to emphasise myself that I was born in Japan and I have all characteristics that all Asian people have such as black eyes and yellow skin, should I call myself an Asian? I’m so confused because when I say I am Chinese( not a citizenship of China), they normally would identify me as people come from China. So I would like to know people in other countries also think that the definition of Chinese refers to people who come from China. Btw, Asian=\=Chinese, but Chinese =Asian, right?

Hello Teresa. If you are Chinese, then you are also Asian. Asian includes Chinese but is not limited to Chinese. Chinese means from China or related to China. You could have two or more cultures. My family is Italian, but I was born and raised in Britain. I consider myself Italian-British. But perhaps what should really define us is not how we look or how we are documented, but how we live. What is our cultural life? In what language or languages do we communicate well? Here's Elena Ferrante in The Guardian on this issue — "Yes, I'm Italian - but…" https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/feb/24/elena-ferrante-on-italian-language-identity
