I came across an interesting article online about working out when you are sick. I would like to share some of the interesting points here.
It's up to body status if it is okay to work out when you are sick, not depending on if you put your game face on. The basic criteria for judgement is that it is okay to work out lightly if the symptom appears above your neck. If the symptom appears below your neck, you shouldn't do that. This is famous criteria called "Neck Rule". The symptoms above your neck are as follows
1)Have stuffy nose like you are coming down with a cold.
2)Feel a bit discomfort around your throat such as you don't have strong pain or don't have a fever.
3)Have mild headache. Sometimes working out makes you feel better in the case that the symptom comes from stress and lack of sleep
4)Have hay fever. You can basically exercise. However, you should avoid doing that when you have difficulty breathing.
On the other hand, you must not work out if you fall under these symptoms below
A)Have a fever over 37.5 degrees. Immune system is working and exercising is counterproductive.
B)Feel a strong sense of fatigue. It is very danger that I can work out even though I'm feeling out of it
C)Can't stop coughing. Your lungs and bronchi can have inflammation.
D)Have a pain in your chest and out of breath. These are so dangerous situation. You must get some rest.
So, you can ask yourself the questions below to judge if you are not feeling well
Q1)Do you have a appetite? If no, skip work-out.
Q2)Do you get much sleep? If no, skip work-out
Q3)Do you think you will be able to recover if you exercise? If no, skip exercise.
I usually go to the gym once a week to work out. So, I'm a bit worried if I wasn't able to go to the gym all week because I feel like muscle loss happens quickly when I stop training. However, this is wrong.
