Hi beautiful people, I’m not so sure about the meaning of the word ‘caveat’ and how to use it even though I’ve looked at a few examples online. Can anyone kindly explain it to me? Thank you for your help!

The origin may concern a warning, but it is typically used to specify a condition or a restriction attached to an offer. It will follow a statement setting out, or describing, the proposal, ‘with the caveat that . . ‘. In effect, it is used to mean ‘on condition that . . ‘ It is used in formal writing and, occasionally, speaking. ‘The manager said that all applicants would be interviewed, with the caveat that they had agreed to submit documentary evidence of having fulfilled the requirements.’ ‘He was offered the job, with the caveat that he would take a course of study to learn English.’ ‘I agreed to let her go home early today, with the caveat that she would complete any unfinished work when she returns.’

In English, “caveat” is a noun referring to a warning, usually when there is just one possible danger in an otherwise seemingly safe situation. Note that in Latin, “caveat” is a verb (3rd person singular subjunctive) meaning let him / her watch out / be careful. It became popular in the English language via the expression “caveat emptor” — buyer beware. The phrase means that when you buy something, you cannot expect the seller to stand behind the merchandise. In today’s America, however, a seller who doesn’t stand behind there product / service is soon out of business.

this is from the Longman Dictionary a warning that you need to be careful about something, especially about a choice or decision that you are thinking of making She will be offered [medical] treatment, with the caveat that it may not work. Since it was the young girl's first time getting pulled over, the police officer let her off [didn't give her a traffic ticket] with the caveat that next time he would not be so lenient.

Try this, Joyce: a warning, for example about the use or effectiveness of something: One caveat: Know when passengers must be back on board the plane. I hope it helps
