We wear kimonos for special occasions such as marriage or graduation ceremonies. Our ancestors used to wear these kimonos on a daily basis; however, it takes a lot of time to get dressed. Also, they are uncomfortable. Since we have accepted western culture, we are more likely to wear Western-type outfits which have made us more productive. However, we want to keep the kimono as a part of Japanese culture. So the government forces sumo athletes, for example, to wear them as their daily outfits. This explains why sumo athletes I saw at the train station were wearing kimonos. That is my perspective on the kimono.
