What's the correct form, and why? - There (is/are) loads of traffic.

Hi there. The correct way to say this is “There IS loads of traffic” A native speaker would shorten it to “There’s loads of traffic.”

This is a very interesting case. Normally LOADS would be plural, so ARE would be correct. Example: "There are five loads of laundry to be washed." However, in this case LOADS is being used as a slang expression to mean A LOT referring to TRAFFIC (not countable and singular). That's why IS is correct here, even though the entire sentence is slang, and not terribly proper grammar.

Hi David. As the others have said, 'is' is the correct answer. Why? Because 'traffic' is an uncountable noun so it takes the 3rd person singular form of the verb.

As others have said, it is "there is loads of traffic." You can also say, "traffic is really bad today." If you'd like to practice your English conversations skills, feel free to send me a message. Cheers!
