Does emocionado mean excited in English?
I have had native speakers tell me that emocionado doesn't really mean excited like it does in English. Could someone explain the context of it?

''Estoy emocionado'' can have several meanings depending on the context, but the most common is similar to ''I'm moved'' or ''I'm touched''

It would be an accurate translation but we don't use the word 'emocionado' or 'estar emocionado' as much as you do in english with the word 'excited'. We would rather say 'tengo ganas de' (I'm looking forward to do something) than 'estoy emocionado por algo'.
