Looking for Chinese (Mandarin) textbook suggestions Hi everyone,  for those of you studying Mandarin, or even teaching it, what textbooks would you recommend, if any?  I have used the Chinese Link series, the Integrated Chinese series, and the Living Language series. They all have plusses and minuses of course, but I am curious if there are others out there that are better.  Any recommendations are appreciated!

Essentially, books write on a topic.

You could get another textbook or you can try and make up a scenario based on a book.

What happens with a book is that a teacher and student get fixated on the sentences in that book. No problem with that if you at an early stage. But what about variation?

Let's say you have a topic about checking into a flight. Add some more yourself!

For example, where's my boarding pass, have you got my arimiles added in, is the plane late, what's the gate number, will it change if the plane is late, how long is it from immigration to the gate, I want an aisle seat.

Just to let you know, there are books in China and Taiwan that have pre-prepared scenarios which contain many sentences for certain scenarios. You see titles such as "4000 essential sentences Chinese English" and they come with an MP3. The unfortunate thing is that they cater to the person whose mother language is Chinese and the second language is English. Basically, it is a rote learning method. Unfortunately, there seems to be very few books going the other way round. Well, I have found a few but they don't contain an MP3 recording of the sentences within the book. I think a major disadvantage and I am not sure why there is such a big hole for the intermediate learner.

Initially, I was rather skeptical of just rote learning but having read and spoken to a number of expert language learners, a key factor is repetition. Notably, after struggling with Chinese Mandarin for a couple yers and not getting very far, I dropped the traditional textbook and just started listening and trying to mimic with lot of success.

If you have another traditional type of textbook, I don't think that is bad per se but I think you can probably do better.
