I have a question for those of you who have either lived in or visited England...

Hi guys, I've been thinking recently about how normalised living in Spain has become for me now that I've been here for over four years. It got me to thinking about culture shock and how unusual and intriguing parts of Spanish culture were for me when I first moved here. I'm wondering what people have found unusual about British culture upon visits to or after moving to live in England.

When I was learning English as a kid I heard that British people drink tea with milk so I wanted to try it myself. The thing is, back then in Serbia, or at least in my family, we only drunk herb tea. So I made myself some camomile tea and added some milk to it. Now that was a cultural shock, I couldn't believe Brits could drink something that disgusting. Later when visiting Britain, what struck me is that people seamed really kind. I was usually told they were cold so I didn't quite expect it.

Ahh yes, there's nothing like a good cuppa Katarina! For most people in England it's black tea with milk. While some people enjoy camomile, it's not as common and we wouldn't add milk to it! At home, I would usually have a box of teabags from a well-known brand such as PG Tips or Tetley. Here in Spain I was surprised by the range of options - Camomile (here it's called Manzanilla), Green tea, Rooibos, Red Tea, Chai and more can be found in most cafés.

I think sometimes 'different' can sometimes be interpreted as 'cold', you know? I've heard the same criticism made of many different cultures, including my own. I think it really depends on who you are lucky enough to come into contact with, your own level of openness and surely a whole bunch of other factors. People show warmth and affection in their own individual ways in addition to the social norms of their own cultures, so sometimes I can see why they may be perceived as 'cold'. I'm glad you had a good experience! (sorry about the camomile haha).
