Cantonese tones
Cantonese tones

It’s interesting that counting from 0 to 9 involves all nine Cantonese tones. Teacher Sophie’s (https://www.italki.com/teacher/1254312) discussion thread mentioning 数字人生 was really fascinating, and the song was well worth a listen. In fact, it was totally amazing! Anyhow, even though I’m not studying Cantonese, I decided to at least try counting from zero to ten. Here’s a link to my 17 second (yeah, I’m slow) recording (the Vocaroo site doesn’t use Java or anything like that). By the way, the recording is louder than expected — I’m not very technically inclined:

All comments on inaccurate tones, initials and finals will be most warmly welcomed. Please be brutally honest. Thank you for reading this.

Here’s Sophie’s italki teacher profile — in case anyone wants to read her interesting posts: https://www.italki.com/teacher/1254312

Thank you that you like my teaching way. .. I am a little too busy after the Oct. Canton fair  . I will do more video for teaching when I have time.

0, should be a little like "ei" +"ng"

3. you should CLOSE your mouth to say"sa:m"

7 , I think you should practice more your tongue and lips, Cantonese pronunciation need the tongue move quickly and forcefully from the tongue's tip to the tongue's bottom, and so do the lips.

 9. it's hard to explain. when you pronounce this. you should tighten your mouth muscles (inside oral cavity 's muscles) ... There are two sets of vowels,  they are very similar. When pronounce them, most of  "mouth muscles" are the same ,but only a very small part of these "muscle" is different... the vowel of "9" in one of these "sets"..

About the tones in your links, some numbers are not very good, but if you talk with us like this, we can understand. For me, language is a tool for communication, as a foreigner, cannot be required to pronounce 100% correct.

Here is one more video for tones, just the same tones in different sentences, hope it can help you. Bon courage! Jia you!

I thought your tones are pretty much spot on, Phil. All of them. I am not patronizing. I just can't understand what the issue was that's implied in the first comment.

You might want to work on the "3" just a bit more. What i heard sounded more like "some". "Saang" would be more like how it should be ---- if you get the drift from my not so proper way of denoting sounds.

wrong tones - 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9  - off

6 - ok

7 - ok

10 - ok

Unfortunately, I don't know the systematic classification of the tones to describe it better to you but most of those tones are inaccurate. I think they would be difficult to understand in normal conversation.

wrong pronunciation

3 - give it more of an "aah" sound.

2.  If you can pronounce the number "one"  in Mandarin, they are the same, but in different tone only.

:) The last tone in your new "vocaroo" is not that correct, The others are good. .. And some vowels are not good. but we can understand.

You really have talent in languages.
