To me, self-confidence is a belief that you can accomplish any task that lies before you.
Self-esteem would be a general good feeling in one's own self worth
This is my take, others may feel differently.
The two are somewhat interchangeably used in my experience

They are definitely interconnected, but, as you said, there's a difference between these two concepts. In my opinion, self-confidence can concern both a specific task (e.g. confidence in one's own cooking abilities) and a general perception of the self. In the first case, I think it's possible to feel confident about something without having a particularly high self-esteem, while in the second case, in my opinion, self-confidence might actually depend on self-esteem. As chuck m already said, self-esteem consists in feeling good about one's own self, so I imagine that, broadly speaking, a person with a low self esteem rarely feels genuinely self-confident.This doesn't mean they can't have a confident attitude (in the end, you can always pretend -- and people might even believe you) or that they can't be confident about a specific task. So, to sum up, I'd say that self-esteem is a perception, while self-confidence is more like an attitude, which can be related to self-esteem or not.
