What are uptalk and vocal fry?
Greetings from Brazil! Guys, I came into these words: "uptalk" and "vocal fry" when I was reading an article, but their meaning weren't clear for me. Could a native English speaker help me? Thanks in advance.

It is hard to explain these without a recording, but I will try. These are two affectations of the voice and are mainly heard with women speakers. Uptalk or Upspeak or The Rising Inflective is a deliberate rise in the voice at the end of a sentence, as though the sentence were a question. "I asked him if he wanted to go shopping with me", with a sharp rise on the "me".
Vocal fry is when someone ends a sentence with a drop in tone. Because it is an unnatural range for many women, it comes out as a growl or gravelly sound. It is less a deliberate sound than a physiological reaction to lowering the voice outside of the speaker's range. Kim Kardashian helped to make this popular a few years back. Men also exhibit these patterns, but it is less common. If you search in YouTube, you can hear examples of these.
