IELTS speaking practical tips (part 1)
IELTS is otherwise known as International English Language Testing System. It is an important English examination that most non-natives speakers need to take in order to study or work in an English speaking country.

In this discussion I will be giving practical tips for those reviewing the IELTS alone or with a teacher.

1.Think in English
It is easier said than done. As a non-native speaker, I have practiced this method consistently and I even watch without subtitles. It is important to practice paraphrasing and learning synonyms. As much as possible, avoid using Google translate and try to think using the language you are learning. When I look at a cup, for example,I will think of the English word “cup” instead of my native Filipino language which is “baso or tasa”. It takes time to build this habit but start it by avoiding translator apps and watching movies or TV series without the subtitles.

2. Write it down
I encourage learners to have a notebook where you can jot down notes. I use a notebook to paraphrase sentences and to write down synonyms. It is a good way to practice IELTS writing as well. When you write down words, it is easier to remember it rather than typing. Studies show that people who hand write their notes remember at least 80% more of the information compared with those who rely on digital devices.

3. Use social media wisely but limit distractions
When you are studying for a test, it is important to focus on your studies. When I was preparing for my IELTS, I didn’t use Facebook for a month, instead I went to the library or a quiet place where I can study. This is of course aside from my classroom based learning with a group and a teacher. There are a lot of useful study groups you can join Facebook though and for Chinese students, you can join Wechat groups where you will get updates about high-frequency questions.

I hope that these tips can help you. Remember that there is no short cut in getting a good score. You need strategies, patience, and SMART as well as REALISTIC goals.

Thanks @Florian. I am working on improving my level in English so I started reading articles and write down the new expressions and words. I try to write my own sentences using those new words and share them on Italki.

I hope that helps me make a difference.
