New students wanted :)
Hi everyone! I've been in Italki for nearly 2 months, but I have no students yet altough I can speak both English and Turkish. :)
How long did you wait for a student when you were new here? Is it really early for new students? Should I be patient and wait more? :)

When I joined the site there were only a handful of Turkish teachers on the site. Now, there are pages of teachers, many of whom charge less than you. I think the reality is that new teachers have to compete on price until they build up a base of regular students. Most new students will likely go for the teachers charging $5US per hour.

I'm sorry the response hasn't been what you hoped. There is simply so much competition! I did speak to a couple of people from Turkey, but they were five or six dollars an hour. I wouldn't necessarily be put off by $10 an hour but any amount of money is difficult for some people.

If I were you, I would spend some time looking at other teacher profiles who have had a good number of students and try to emulate them to the extent you can and are comfortable doing so. You have to sell what people want to buy.

I wish you well.

I didn’t realise that you were a teacher. Maybe you could correct more notebook entries in Turkish or start language related discussions, for instance about idioms, difficult grammar points. Or something culture really about the Turkish culture.

Unfortunately for me you arrived in italki too late, you need to be a bit more business like at the end of your English introduction to gain more interest. The written part of you English profile could be expanded to include words and phrases like "I enjoy teaching" "I can asses your Turkish level and recommend the best course for you" "I will quickly asses your weaknesses" "Whatever style of teaching you prefer, I can work with you"

You need too include a little more than just PDF's etc, you need to tell the students you will find extra materials from various sources to help them with their weaknesses.

Your English is good and I know that you speak the correct Turkish accent that is recommended by the Turkish ? ( I forgot the name) TDK ?, In all new ventures it takes a while to get the first customer, in this case a student.
To get all new ventures of the ground you have to advertise a lot until eventually and gradually word of mouth means you do not have to advertise so often.

I wish you well.
There is a problem that you have to make a decision about, do you charge the normal rate or hope to get more regular customers by being cheaper. Or having fewer customers but with gaps in between when you are not busy. Remember sometimes it is easier to reduce prices than it is too increase them. Also sometimes it is possible to be too cheap and people think the product cannot be good, when this happens increasing the price of the product sometimes brings more customers.
Once you attract that first customer things will improve. There has been an increase in Turkish teachers here because of the global situation.
