In my Conversational English classes, I like to provide topics for the student and I to discuss.

What topics do you enjoy talking about in your lessons?

Here is an example:

Topic: Happiness

-Are you a happy person?

-What makes you happy?

-When was the happiest moment in your life?

-How do you define happiness?

-Can money buy happiness?

-Do you agree or disagree: "People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different"

-How do you think social media effects people's happiness?

I suppose you get all sorts so it's best to keep it as general as possible. Personally I am very interested in cosmology, but it'll be silly if I talk about the birth and evolution of the universe with the first stranger I meet.

To that extent your suggested topic is good because it is general and positive. Asking about, say, loneliness or depression is likely to press the wrong buttons. Maybe their country and culture including language, food, music, festivals, geography, weather or even the principal economic activities?

I don't know the age of your students but there should be topic about environment. For example it's asked , What can be done to protect the environment as a individual?

What will you do if a genie makes you a very great English native speaker right now? This will make the student unconsciously give you their long term goal for their Learning. You can also try to identify their profession, hobbies and interest so that you can tailor your topics around there and make it as engaging as possible. If you are given a minute with the richest man in the world what are you going to say to him? Given that you have the chance to choose just one between being exceptionally beautiful but not clever, or being a genius and ugly. What will be your choice and why?
