The dangers of standing out in a crowd: Should you stand out, or blend in?
I am an “individualistic person,” so, I like to be queer, and I also like equally weird people. My friend Daisy is a stand out, she is statuesque and has the personality of a “Lara Croft” so, you could just imagine how confident she is as a person. When we joined a competition, in which we both won first place (it was a running competition), Daisy was wearing a gown and still managed to win. I never saw a runner pull off a podium win wearing something so long and uncomfortable. To say it bluntly,” she is a stand out intentionally and unintentionally.”

Although I must say that the dangers of standing out actually far outweigh the advantages when you are in a position that involves people and traveling. In one of my favorite travel websites, the color black is a good backpack color because you would “blend in” a crowd. In some occasions, blending in is a better option than standing out or else you will put yourself in a position where you can be a “target” , you can be a rather easy target.

There are people who are a stand out, it can be because of their looks or their personality and even unnecessary display of wealth. When I went to Vietnam, a lot of foreigners complained of being scammed and judging on what they were wearing, I was not surprised. Why would you wear a Rolex and a Birkins bag while traveling? It is not the place to display wealth and opulence.

My story is a bit long but to cut it short...Do you like to be a stand out or someone who blends in a crowd?

It depends on my mood and the context. I’d love to have all eyes on me as I sing my heart out at a karaoke bar, but if I’m at an outdoor market in a foreign city I want to melt into the crowd.

@Sky it is right point. Of course if some preferences, dress code exist it would be better to know it in advance and to follow it.

Depends where you are. If you are visiting China for example absolutely blend in. If you are in LA or SF stand out. It’s all about knowing your surroundings and weighing the pros and cons of standing out vs blending in.

I think that usually I stand out, but I think it is normal as every person is unique personality. I don't wear brand things, clothes as I don't care about brands. I just wear that I like according to my mood and style. But in case some dress code is needed I will correspond to it of course. But not only clothes reflects personality. Even in crowd you can notice someone from the crowd not because of some clothes.
