Fellow italki members,
Please be careful when giving out your skype number and using your web-cams; an ongoing investigation into the hacking of peoples web-cams has been highlighted on the BBC News today.

Women, please don't trust every man who wants to exchange skype numbers, with the excuse of """helping"""" you learn the language of your choice.
But they can't hack my cam because the internet connection in Syria is too slow (512 Kb/sec)
so they will not see any thing
@tarek
As far as I know the number is linked to the ID. A skype phone call can take place by video or by audio only.
The skype comment is really a side issue that I wanted to mention because it can be abused in many ways. I would never use skype (video) with a stranger (my personal opinion) for many reasons.
But the Hacker can just send you an innocent link which if you clicked on it- could enable them to control your computer and the webcam; or if you visited a web page that had a program secretly put on it, you also become a victim!
AVG software is quite good but it's best to seek professional advice in this matter :)
@Kim
If you watch the video clip, it does explain that the light goes on when the cam is being activated. I would suggest getting a firewall if you haven't already and some 'duck tape'!

To be honest we really are in a vulnerable situation when it comes to 'Hackers', if they target the general public they will probably be successful due to their ignorance of 'computer security' etc.
I didn't intend to cause aniexty or fear but I just wanted to highlight this crime and the importance or security.
Keep safe :)
Yeah; that's right. that's why you need to figure your skype as well to not have a spam call for unknown poeple, and It will be good if you hide your identity to not be searched automatically from someone around the world. For hacking via Cams, it's something real. Anyone can controls your Cam even your Cam is turn off. So knew as well with who you talk. (I am a programmer too, i say that by experience :)).
As we say in the Moroccan Arabic: myaat takhmeema w takhmeema wala darba bal mqass.
ماية تخميمة وتخميمة ولا دربه بالمقص which litterary means: 100 thinking and thinkings than being hurted by scissors
This scares me a little bit. Maybe you'll know... When my webcam turns on, a little blue light on my laptop comes up. If there is a malware or someone has hacked my computer somehow, would that little blue light come on if they start using my webcam? I really want to know.
