How to overcome the unexpected communication barrier?

Hi, has anyone overcome their tackle with communication barrier when meeting the unknown/new visual signer (Sign language - ASL, BSL, etc) in person?

 

Such as fear? exciting? embarrassing? avoiding? Is body language mandatory? Or is International sign language better to start with? Can you cope with mis-understanding conversation?

Hi. I'm Lais from brazil. Actually I'm hearing and interpreter. I teach deaf students here. And I Want to learn others sign languages to travel with my students and make some conversation groups.
