I’m coming from a country where no one drinks. I’m curious about drinking. Is it considered bad to drink? Harmful? I’m wondering about the stereotypes about who drinks, too.

It's a very complicated subject. In most areas of the US drinking is very common. If we go out to dinner, etc. it virtually always includes some drinking (wine, beer, cocktails) for many people. Sometimes people who don't drink at all are considered to be uptight, unable to relax, no fun. On the other hand, drinking too much is a very big problem. In the US, drunkeness was such a big problem that alcohol was outlawed in 1920. However, most of the population continued to drink anyway--they just had to buy alcohol illegally. This lead to a huge increase in organized crime, which we are sill living with today. Eventually the government realized that Prohibition was a bad idea, and it was repealed in 1933. So, a lot of it comes down to how much people drink, how they behave when they drink, and whether it creates problems, e.g. drinking so much that one cannot perform the normal responsibilities of life, driving while drunk, etc.

In the United States, our cultural norm is that it is OK to drink "in moderation," but bad to drink too much. Drinking "in moderation" is another way of saying "not too much." The legal drinking age is 18, and this is taken seriously. Anyone who tries to buy (say) beer will be "carded"--asked to prove that they are over 18 by showing official ID, such as a driver's license. I am in my seventies, but if I try to buy beer, even I will be carded. US attitudes have been shaped by an historical event known as "prohibition." From 1920 to 1933 it was illegal to sell alcohol (for drinking) in the United States. It was a terrible failure. The main effect was to create a vast criminal enterprise, "bootlegging," the illegal importing and sale of liquor. The result is that many people think drinking is bad for society, but that prohibiting drinking is worse. Drinking is common, but not by any means universal. In a typical US party or holiday gathering, there will usually be alcoholic beverages, and if you look carefully you will usually see that some people are not, in fact, drinking. The host comes around with a bottle of wine and the non-drinkers smile politely, put their hand over their glass, and say "none for me, thank you."

Drinking so much is dangerous, alcohol damages the liver and may cause cancer and cirrhosis. In addition, is behind a large number of car accidents. But, I think you can drink in moderation and enjoy one beer or wine in your meal. The goal is enjoy the taste, not get drunk! Please, responsability.

Attitudes toward drinking vary widely across cultures, and what is considered acceptable or unacceptable can be highly influenced by social, cultural, religious, and legal factors. In many societies, moderate and responsible drinking is generally accepted, while excessive or irresponsible drinking may be viewed negatively. Here are some general perspectives on drinking: Cultural and Social Norms: In some cultures, alcohol is a part of social and religious traditions, and moderate drinking may be considered acceptable. In other cultures, there may be strong taboos against alcohol consumption. Health Considerations: Excessive alcohol consumption is universally recognized as harmful to health. It can lead to a range of physical and mental health issues, including liver disease, addiction, and impaired cognitive function. Legal Regulations: The legal drinking age and regulations surrounding alcohol vary by country. In some places, there are strict laws governing when and where alcohol can be consumed, while in others, there may be more lenient regulations. Individual Choices: Many people around the world choose not to drink for various reasons, including personal preferences, health concerns, or religious beliefs. Stereotypes: Stereotypes about people who drink can vary. In some cultures, there may be stereotypes associated with heavy drinkers, such as being irresponsible or lacking self-control. However, it's important to recognize that these stereotypes do not apply universally to everyone who drinks. It's crucial to approach alcohol with a sense of responsibility and moderation. If you're curious about trying alcohol, consider doing so in a safe and controlled environment, and be aware of your own limits. If you choose not to drink, that's perfectly acceptable as well. Ultimately, the decision to drink or not should align with your personal values and beliefs, and it's important to respect the diverse perspectives that exist around the world.
