Problems in English speaking practice
I had been studying English for several years but I didn't really study. I was not hard working enough and not required to use English; I mean, I just learn it when I felt like to or didn't know what to do and popped out the idea of learning English to kill time.
This year, I decided to learn English seriously. I will write everyday and speak everyday. I have been practicing speaking English for about 10 days or more. My big problem is that, I cannot use new words to discribe my thoughts. I tried to think about the new words for a while while I am talking but it didn't work. I think I listen and read English everyday. I think I will get acquaitance to the new words but I cannot use them from my listening or reading, so why? I want to talk about diversity topics and the phrases I used to be more complicated. How can I do it in the fastest way? I have been learning English for decades and I really want to get to a higher level.
Please correct or give me some advise.
Thank you!

Problems while Speaking English
I have been studying English for several years, but I did not study seriously nor apply myself, as I should have. Since I was not required to use English, I was simply not working hard enough at learning it, which is another way of saying that I only studied it whenever I felt like it, or whenever I constructively wanted to kill some time. This year, however, I decided to take learning English seriously. I will write, as well as speak in it every day. In fact, I have been practicing speaking English for the past 10 days or more.
My biggest problem is that I cannot use the new words I am learning to vocalize and describe my thoughts. While I am talking, I tried thinking about and using the new words, but it does not seem to be working very well. It is very frustrating for me since I am immersing myself in English every day. I think I have gotten comfortable with many new words, but seemingly, I cannot use them in my normal conversations, so why? I want to be able to talk about diverse topics, and for my phrases, if not my overall sentence constructions, to be more complex. How can I be able to do it in the fastest way? Although I have been learning English for decades, I really want to get to a higher level and be more fluent.
Please correct me here, as well as give me some advice. Thank you!
Hi, Molly. Good job! Whatever changes I made were to allow your sentences to sound more natural to my native ears, to clarify your thoughts, and for ease of reading. My sincerest apologies if I have misinterpreted. I hope that this helps you, Jonathan
As to the post, you go back and forth with your tense—be consistent unless there is some valid reason for changing it. The word, “everyday,” means commonplace, you meant, every day, which means “each day,” they are not synonymous. We spell the word, “describe,” like such; doing so with an “i” after the first letter would have the same sound, but it is incorrect. To advise someone means to give him or her some advice; advice is suggestions or ideas as to how to do something.
As for not being more fluent, to me, it sounds like you are trying to fit your limited English vocabulary atop your speech, while simultaneously searching for the right word, which is not working. If that is the case, it shows that your vocabulary is not as strong as you think it is, or that you truly do not know the word to instantly recall and use it. It could also mean that you vocabulary is too profession-oriented (medical, legal, etc.), and those terms do not appear in everyday speech. If you can read in English and understand the ideas the words are conveying, then, in the spur of the moment, you should be able to construct your sentences, in English, as needed.
Humor me and try this. If you are sitting at your desk, name everything around you, being as descriptive as possible. For me, I can say, “I see my computer, and its keyboard, both are black and plastic. Within a dark gray cup, there are pens of various colors, a black marker, and a pair of scissors. There is a 4 x 5-inch box of white tissues, which is blue with a flowery design. There is a half-empty can of Coke, the can is red with white letter.” Etc., etc. If you are sitting in your living room, try the same thing with whatever you see. Conversely, simply describe what you are currently wearing. Again, if you can do these things quickly and easily, then your vocabulary is fine, but if not, then, you need to improve it. Do this on the bus, at school, wherever you are at until you improve---these are the words, the vocabulary, of everyday life. Best of luck!

First, make sure you are speaking and listening with a native speaker for a couple of hours every week. I use HelloTalk to practice my Spanish. I record myself and people provide me with corrections. I also have made some friends on WeChat and I record myself and send them to my friends. Most importantly, find a friend or two, you can have full conversations with them. We all want to speak our target language, but we are most afraid of actually speaking it.
Second, use a spaced repetition system. It is a flashcard system, based on an algorithm. I like Anki or Quizlet. Create flashcards in your target language only. You can add visuals too. For Anki, I record myself speaking the word. I also create flashcards with fill-in sentences to help with grammar.
Third, I speak to Google Translate in my target language. If Google can understand me then so can a person. My dogs now understand some Spanish too, because I only speak to them in Spanish.
Fourth add a mnemonic. In Spanish, the word to lift up is "levantar". I remember this verb because in Harry Potter they chant "leviosa" to make things float. If you were to watch me say "leventar" you would actually see me flick my wrist. Honestly, and shamefully, I usually remember things that are dirty or sexual in nature.
Lastly, at the end of the day hold a review. Try and remember all the words and grammar rules you learned that day. What was the most challenging? What was easy? Neuroscience suggests this is an important step in the learning process.
