남자들이 차 안에 자고 있습니다. ---> 남자들이 차 안에서 자고 있습니다.

My two cents,
When talking about "activities" in a place, the location particle "에서" is used, on the other hand,
when describing "status" in a place, "에" is preferred, so that "에" is often used with "있다/없다" indicating "existence".:)

"자고 있다" is definitely an activity.

e.g.

먹고 있다 = to be eating
식당에서 먹고 있다 = I'm eating someting in a restaurant.

집에 있다 = at home
나는 집에 있어요 = I'm at home.
(it's describing "where you are" not "what you are doing")
