The Battles of Rzhev in World War II (the Rzhev Meat Grinder)

The Rzhev Battles were combat operations of Soviet and German forces that took place in the area of the Rzhev-Vyazma Salient from January 8, 1942 to March 30, 1943.
Rzhev was a railway node [Equally good variant:  "railway hub"].  It was strategically important for Nazi Germany due to the bridgehead for the offensive on Moscow. The capture of Rzhev by Soviet forces allowed the possibility of supplying for offensive operations in the western direction.
Therefore, the following four battles for Rzhev took place:
1. The first Rzhev-Vyazma strategic offensive operatian, as the continuation of the Soviet winter counteroffensive of 1941 (8 January – 20 April 1942).
2. The first Rzhev-Sychyovka strategic offensive operation (30 July – 01 October 1942).
3. The second Rzhev-Sychyovka strategic offensive operation, or the Operation “Mars” (25 November – 20 December 1942).
4. The Operation “Büffel” was the German evacuation of the Rzhev Salient (the second Rzhev-Vyazma offensive operation of Soviet forces) (01-30 March 1943).
All these offensive operations by/of Soviet forces were intended to defeat the German Army Group Centre, to liberate Rzhev, Sychyovka, and Vyazma, and thus eliminate the Rzhev Salient.
