I do better when explaining with examples. I translated them to help you as well.
Mejor= better
Mas= more
I like cookies better than cake. - Me gusta galletas mejor que pastel.
I like chocolate more than vanilla. - Me gusta chocolate mas que vanilla.
I love you more. - Te amo mas.
I think your hair looks better like that. - Pienso que tu cabello se mira mejor asi.
Spanish is better than English. - Español es mejor que Ingles.
I like Spanish more than English. - Me gusta Español mas que Ingles.

You can say "I like X better than Y" or "I like X more than Y"
Both are correct, and the meaning is the same.
However, "more" can also be used in a lot of other contexts (such as "I hate X more than Y") where you cannot use "better"
