Swim in The Chlorine

Today I went to the swimming pool with my friends, but I was surprised that the water wasn't normal. It was so smelly, because it consists (better to use had) of a lot of chlorine and a little of water. Despite of(or In spite of ) this, I jumped into the water without taking into account any consequences.
When I plunged completely, I forgot to close my eyes. And that's was the biggest mistake I did in this month, I felt like I set fire in my eyes(maybe you can say "like my eyes caught fire"). I tried to open them, but without to no avail.

After about a minute, my eyes started to recover their state (you do not need this), and they opened heavily. I decided to stop swimming and wait for my freinds to finish sterilization.

I have correcte some mistakes while trying not to influence your choice of words much. Hope this helps :)
