The Valley of the Fallen - Part II Having ruled the country with iron fist since the end of the Civil War, Franco died in 1975 and, for the surprise of the People of Spain, his body was sent to the Valley of the Fallen, where lies next to Primo de Rivera. This way, Franco became the first person buried in this place who had died much time after the war, and the Valley turned into the destiny of pilgrimage of Francoism acolytes, which each Franco’s death anniversary salute the dictator with their raised arms. Back to the present, the proposal was approved with the support of the majority of the Parliament, with the only abstention of a nationalist catalan party and the Popular Party (PP), the one who rules the Government. The PP is not bound to abide the outcome as it is a non-binding proposal. Being the conservatives, always less inclined to get fussy about remains of the dictatorship, there is almost no likelihood of this getting ahead. The detractors claim that deads should be let rest in peace and, as they usually say when it comes to pre-democracy matters, that under no circumstances should we reopen old wounds and we just have to leave the past behind. But shouldn’t we be able to amend our past actions in order to have a better future? Are not these wounds still open since we are still discussing such matters? I was born many years after Franco’s death, so I did not live neither the war nor the dictatorship, but it comes clearly to me that both of them had very different implications from one and other. In my opinion, we should not consider all the wounds healed as long as there are families looking for their missing relatives while the dictator rests inside what was called the symbol of the concord. It is not about looking for guilties, trying to change the past in retaliation, or setting a moral war. But, definitely it is not aesthetic having Franco buried like a pharaoh in his flamboyant pyramid. After 40 years of democracy, it is high time to exhumed the man who standed against it. Perhaps, if Franco rested somewhere else, the Valley would finally become a real symbol of the concord and memory.
