[The word is tantamount to magic.] [I am trying to express this English statement.]
"The word", when used in this context, means language in general, either written or spoken.
"Tantamount" means equivalent to in power, capability, or any and all potential.
The meaning is that language can do as much good or bad as any magic ever could. Magic being imagined powerful abilities that transcend the known limitations of beings.

How about translating the expression as follows?

(I’ll make suggestions with my personal opinion because sometimes there are cases the literal translation doesn’t sound very natural.)

There are several translations depending on the contexto, feeling of each person, etc. In general, as Kanji-san said, it is translated 言葉は魔物, however, there can be others like:
言葉は魔法/言葉は魔法のようだ/言葉は魔法みたい/言葉には魔力がある/言葉には力がある and more.
To sound cool or not also depends on the person, so I think it’s if to touch the heart or not at the moment when someone listens it.
Anyways, good job! I hope you can get other people’s opinion.

厄介/やっかい : troublesome/tricky
This sentence is grammatically correct however it sounds literal to me.
I would say
The words are just like magic!
"言葉はまるで魔法みたい!"
まるで~みたい : just like...
or
The words are almost magic!
"言葉はほぼ魔法!"
I am not using the word "tantamount" here but I feel this sentence can convey the same meaning and it's more natural and fascinating to me. To me, in English, it's the same too.
I totally agree with this sentence,
We don't need to go to Hogwarts, we are already capable to use this beautiful magic♪
