But we don't practice our pronunciation, nor our listening skills. We try to read the words as we'd in our native languages, so we end up with a terrible pronunciation. If we read an "a" for instance, we'll always pronounce it as the "a" in "father", despite the richness of the English phonetics. And the same can be applied to many other kind of learners. Fortunately, there's something called the "International Phonetic Alphabet" (IPA), and it's really worth to learn it. It just tell you how to pronounce every word in your target language. It may seem difficult at first, but after few days of practice you can realize how useful it is. There are even a lot of Youtube channels which teach you how to make every of those sounds. I'm already using it to relearn every word from my English vocabulary. I'm trying to put away that harmful Latin alphabet, and to use this one instead. My procedure is simple. I look for any word at Wiktionary, and then save both the record and the IPA's spelling. Only after I've learned to recognize the sound and to reproduce it I study the actual spelling of the word. At this exact moment I kind of feel like a child when it's time to study some new vocabulary, but it's OK.
