"Can I borrow a pencil?" "Yes, I will loan you a pencil." Also....you are borrowing money from the bank or the bank is loaning you money. Same thing but it depends on the perspective.

Loan is usually formal, you need to pay it back by a certain date or bad things happen. Borrow is casual. "I took out a loan for $500. I need to pay it back by next month." vs "Can I borrow your pen for a moment?"

"Loan" is the noun, and can also be used as a synonym of the verb "to lend". When you *lend* something to someone, you allow them to use it for a while, with the expectation that they will return it to you. The person who receives the item (etc.) in order to use it for a while and then return it, is *borrowing* the item.
