On vs. nous
Every time I think about avoiding "nous", I will hear it used the way one might expect, for "we".
Are there rules where one should NOT use "on" for what might be translated in English as "we"?
Merci beaucoup!

In French, "on" is a commonly used informal pronoun that can mean "we," "one," or "people" depending on the context. While "on" is widely accepted in spoken and informal written French, there are certain situations where it may be more appropriate to use "nous." Here are some guidelines:
Formal Writing: In formal writing, such as academic papers, business documents, or formal letters, it is generally better to use "nous" to mean "we." "On" can come across as too casual in these contexts.
Emphasis: If you want to emphasize the group you're referring to, "nous" is often preferred. For example, if you want to say, "We are the best," and want to emphasize the "we" part, it's better to say, "Nous sommes les meilleurs" rather than "On est les meilleurs."
Clarity: In situations where there might be confusion about whether "on" means "we" or "one," using "nous" can provide more clarity. For instance, if you want to say, "We are going to the party," it's more straightforward to say, "Nous allons à la fête."
Cultural and Regional Variations: Keep in mind that the use of "on" and "nous" can vary by region and culture. In some parts of Francophone countries, "on" might be more commonly used in formal settings, while in others, "nous" is preferred.
Context Matters: The choice between "on" and "nous" often depends on the specific context and the level of formality you want to convey. In everyday, casual conversation, "on" is perfectly acceptable for "we."
Ultimately, the choice between "on" and "nous" depends on the level of formality you want to achieve and the specific context in which you're communicating. In informal settings and everyday conversation, "on" is commonly used for "we," but in formal writing or when clarity and emphasis are important, "nous" may be a better choice.

C'est du français familier oral. Dans une situation très formelle, à ne pas faire.
